Rome Christian Tour: Itinerary

9:00 AM: Begin Your Journey – Hotel or Airbnb Pickup:

Let’s start the tour from :

Archbasilica of  St. John Lateran

The Basilica of St. John Lateran has played an important role throughout history; it was here that all popes were enthroned up until 1870. Nowadays, Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterno is where the Pope, as Bishop of Rome, celebrates Holy Thursday Mass. Founded in 324 by Constantine the Great, it is the oldest public church in the city of Rome and the oldest basilica of the Western world.

Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore

Founded in 432 CE, the basilica houses what is believed to be a relic of the manger in which the infant Jesus was laid in Bethlehem as well as the Marian icon Salus Populi Romani. The basilica contains several series of remarkable mosaics and the tombs of seven popes.

The Church of St. Ignatius

One of the most interesting but not well known attractions is the so-called “Flat Dome” of the Church of St. Ignazio of Loyola,  a classic example of Italian Baroque, not only for its structure and its decorations, but also for the extraordinary optical illusions created by Andrea del Pozzo, famous author of trompe-l’oeil frescoes. The ceiling, in fact, seems to open in a wide three-dimensional space, giving the illusion that the building is higher than it really is. The best way to view the illusion is to enter the church, keeping your eyes low until you reach the circular marble marker that indicates the ideal vantage point for taking in the “dome.” A second marker on the floor indicates the ideal viewing spot for the rest of the ceiling.

1:00 PM: Lunch time: stop to taste

  • Roman Pizza and supplì from renowned street-food chefs
  • Espresso tasting at Rome’s most famous coffee shop
  • Tiramisu tasting in a renowned pastry shop

2:30 PM: Restart the magical journey

Basilica of Saints John and Paul on the Caelian Hill

Is an ancient basilica church in Rome, located on the Caelian Hill. It was originally built in 398. It is home to the Passionists and is the burial place of St. Paul of the Cross. Additionally, it is the station church of the first Friday in Lent.

St. Paul Outside the Walls

With its imposing structure, the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls is the second largest basilica after St. Peter’s. According to tradition, the church lies on the site where the Apostle Paul was buried; here, the Christians erected a sepulchral chapel, namely a memorial, later transformed into a basilica by the Emperor Constantine and consecrated in 394 by Pope Sylvester. Although the Basilica isn’t in the heart of the city, we recommend visiting this unique and astonishing church in order to see its impressive mosaics, atrium, and interior.
